How Can Technology Be Effectively Applied in Support of eLearning Objectives?

Background

Inspired by the advent of new information and communication technologies, use of technology-mediated learning environments is on the rise. The number of online courses offered through academic and professional institutions is evidence of this. Although research related to technology-based learning has been with us for more than 30 years, we are still at an early stage of knowing how to effectively apply technology in support of learning. In this endeavor, textual material is supplemented by still images, animation, video sequences, and/or sound sequences. The objective is to produce an enhanced learning environment in which students will be able to learn and understand more effectively. To this end, we have been involved in the development and assessment of eLearning tools. The results of this work has been published in scientific journals as well as business media. In addition, our eLearning tools called eTutor has been adopted by McGraw Hill in support of their Management Information Systems textbooks.

Project Description

This project seeks to use voice communication for the user to interact with our eLearning system. The communication would be transmitted via a Web Portal to a receiving media (e.g., a wearable computer). It is expected that this increases flexibility of usage and as a result would enhance the usability of the system because the learner is able to use the eLearning system anywhere. This is attractive to those learners who need to be on the move as well as handicapped persons who are unable to use usual input/output devices (i.e. mouse, key board, and computer screens).

Potential Benefits to a Sponsoring Organization

The content of the eLearning environment would be tailored to the needs of the organization. The system would be supported by traditional input/output media as well as voice communication system. As a result, the organization would be able to use the system immediately in support of its organizational learning and knowledge management with flexibility.
